Senior Cat Modeller

Czech Republic Full-time
Apply for the position

We are looking for an experienced Senior Cat Modeller to drive the development of VIG Re’s global Natural Catastrophe modelling capabilities. You will help shape our view of risk, strengthen our technical pricing, and enable the profitable growth of our global Catastrophe portfolio. This is a unique opportunity to take ownership of VIG Re’s in‑house modelling strategy and directly influence underwriting decisions across multiple markets.

What you can expect

  • Impact: Take the lead in bringing NatCat analytics & modelling fully in‑house and contribute to establishing VIG Re’s independent view of risk for global NatCat perils. Help design modelling standards, challenge assumptions, and develop pricing frameworks that directly support profitable and sustainable underwriting decisions
  • Technical excellence: Support the validation and challenge of vendor models and translate modelling insights into clear recommendations for underwriters, senior management and internal stakeholders. You will shape how we assess catastrophe risk today and in the future, including emerging perils and climate‑related trends
  • Responsibility: A broad spectrum of responsibilities awaits you: building-up NatCat analytics & modelling, incl. data management, model runs and result analysis, accumulation management, event response, rapid loss estimation and the development of robust exposure data pipelines. You will steer high‑impact modelling programmes with significant influence on capital, risk, and underwriting processes
  • Innovation & building-up: Be at the forefront of setting up our modelling landscape – from workflow automation to API‑driven data pipelines and analytical dashboards. Your ideas will help create a faster, more transparent, and more scalable modelling environment
  • Involvement: You collaborate closely with Underwriting, Corporate Underwriting, Risk Management, Retrocession, IT/Data and external partners. You mentor colleagues, ensure knowledge sharing, and actively contribute to cross‑functional initiatives that strengthen analytical capabilities throughout VIG Re.

What we expect

  • Deep NatCat modelling expertise: Proven mastery of major vendor models, global peril suites, hazard/vulnerability modules, and secondary uncertainty. Strong ability to calibrate models, evaluate model change, and formulate independent assumptions based on data and expert judgement
  • Technical & analytical strength: Proficiency in Python, SQL and modern data engineering workflows. Experience with exposure data standards (OED), geocoding, data QC, and automated pipelines. Strong skills in reinsurance technical pricing, EP/AE curves, tail metrics, and capital impact interpretation
  • Strategic, structured thinker: Able to challenge assumptions, propose modelling alternatives, and navigate uncertainty in emerging markets and imperfect datasets. Experience representing modelling viewpoints to rating agencies, regulators, vendors, and senior management
  • Leadership & collaboration: Ability to guide and coach Modellers and Underwriters on technical topics. Strong communication skills to translate analytics into actionable underwriting insights
  • Experience & education: 8+ years of experience in NatCat modelling or analytics in a (re)insurance environment
  • University degree in mathematics, statistics, geoscience, engineering, climatology, or a related quantitative field
  • Fluency in English; any additional language is an advantage.

What we offer

  • A rare opportunity to set and own the modelling strategy of a growing international reinsurer
  • Professional development within one of the leading insurance groups in Central and Eastern Europe
  • Full-time position located in Prague – with flexibility and a hybrid work environment
  • A dynamic and truly international culture with direct exposure to Senior Management
  • Attractive, performance-oriented remuneration package
  • Modern offices and close collaboration with colleagues across Europe
